17 views of the J.R. Line, Tokyo
Decorative work for Abercrombie and Fitch (A&F) flagship stores have taken me around the world.
For three months, in the fall of 2009, I stayed in Tokyo, Japan, as an assistant to painter Mark Beard working on an 11- story-high mural we painted and installed inside the A&F flagship store of Ginza.
As a diversion, I wandered every morning in near-by neighborhoods, looking for something that could let me really explore the city.
I found it in the elevated Japan Railways tracks, just west of Ginza, and filled up two sketchbooks with watercolors done on the spot. These, I developed later in kakemono oil paintings in my New York studio, and also produced 3D cutouts.
This project came as a complement to my previous exploration along the Hudson River Line.
