A systematic exploration of the 31 train stations along the MTA and Amtrak Hudson River lines. The paintings were executed in the summers of 2007 and 2008.
While painting along the Hudson River Line, some friendly encounters happened. The interaction was immediately registered on the back of the painting that had originated the discussion. Doing so allows the painting to be more than just a depiction of a cityscape; the onlookers’ reactions that were captured during the painting sessions now provide context about the painting itself.
Each painting is framed with a collage of train schedules for that station pasted on the wooden frame, as shown below in my departure point Grand Central Station.
The transcription of all the train encounters have been collected in a book, Hudson Line Departures, available in print or as a free e-book.
